Abstract

The sketch “Lithuania”, Podlasie and potato. On a certain regional narration is devoted to the literary subject of the connection of “Lithuania” (the
former Grand Duchy of Lithuania) and north-eastern Poland (Podlasie), once constituting its part, with America and its discovery by Christopher
Columbus. The author interprets an unfinished mock heroic poem Kartofla (The Potato) by Adam Mickiewicz as an example of discourse of integration-emancipation character, which uses the analogy “Lithuania” – America in order to build a local identity story. In the sketch there are also later references to the American subject from the literature of this region of Europe (Rodzinna Europa (Family Europe) by Czesław Miłosz, Szczuropolacy
(Rat-Poles) by Edward Redliński).
