The material for analysis is restricted to surnames consisting of two or more
lexemes, whose spelling complies with current orthographic rules of the German
language. The aim of the study was to determine which parts of speech appear
as lexemes in compound surnames and to establish the semantic groups to
which modifiers are assigned. This applies to compound names consisting of
two (or more) nouns. The analysed material contains four groups of compounds:
noun + noun, adjective + noun, verb + noun or noun + verb, other. Among the
compounds consisting of two nouns there are ones whose first lexeme is: a proper
name, the name of a thing, the name of a plant or its part, the name of an animal,
an abstract name, the name of a profession, the name of a metal or a material
noun.
