Abstract

The article presents abbreviation techniques originally used in the Latin texts and further adapted by the Polish language. The author attempts to prove that the contemporary patterns of abbreviating constitute the continuation of the methods used in previous centuries. The form of the abbreviates was changing and undergoing gradual unification with the passing ages, however the temporary graphic abbreviates are the continuation of the historical abbreviations as far as the abbreviating methods are concerned.
