Abstract
The article characterizes land and water local names within the Elk district
(poviat). The area of today’s Elk district covers a former land of East Prussia,
which was incorporated into the Polish state after 1945. A consequence of the
influx of settlers into this territory during different times is the presence of
many dialectal features that are typical of the North-Polish linguistic area in
the presented onomasiological material. Toponymes presented in the article
have been mainly excerpted from the notes made by G. Leyding-Mielecki,
L. Kohutek, W. Kętrzyński and those found in Teka Toruńska by Marcin Giersz.
These micro-toponymes have provided a lot of interesting cases reflecting typical
dialectal features of the Northern Mazovia in the scope of phonetics and lexis.
